State 糖心少女 Department Hosts My Sister鈥檚 Keeper Spring Stem Day Event

The 糖心少女 (NYSED) today听hosted the听My Sister鈥檚 Keeper Spring STEM Day event听at听SUNY听Old听Westbury.听Approximately听650听young women and girls听gathered听from various regions of the state听to听learn more about the college experience,听attend听workshops and panel discussions, 补苍诲听hear听directly听from听SUNY Old Westbury students.听The听full-day event marks the second annual My Sister鈥檚 Keeper听(MSK)听event hosted by NYSED, which launched the MSK initiative in 2025.

Board of Regents Chancellor Lester W. Young, Jr.听said,听鈥淢y Sister鈥檚 Keeper reflects听our听commitment to ensuring that young women of color have听access to听the听opportunities听补苍诲听support听they need听to thrive in STEM. Events like today鈥檚听are part of that mission鈥攂ringing听learning to life, connecting students with mentors,听补苍诲听providing听real-world experiences that affirm听students鈥櫶齪otential and expand their vision for what is possible. When we invest in curiosity and leadership, we听can听strengthen not only the future听of these young women and girls, but the future of our communities and our state.鈥

Commissioner Betty A. Rosa听said,听鈥淥ne of the听top priorities for an event such as this is听to听empower girls and young women听who dream of one day making their mark听in STEM.听By creating spaces where young women can see themselves reflected in STEM fields, engage in hands-on learning, and build confidence alongside their peers, we听can break down barriers and turn these dreams into reality. Through My Sister鈥檚 Keeper, we are nurturing talent, fostering belonging, and ensuring that the next generation of innovators is as diverse, dynamic, and brilliant as the听communities they serve.鈥

Building upon the success of the New York State My Brother鈥檚 Keeper听(NYSMBK)听initiative,听MSK听focuses听on the specific challenges girls and young women of color experience in STEM education听补苍诲听works to eliminate gender disparities in STEM fields while supporting diversity and building leadership skills in future female leaders.

The Spring STEM Day event included a tour of the SUNY Old Westbury campus,听presentations on admissions and financial aid, workshops, and panel discussions.听The workshops听provided听students听with听firsthand experience听engaging听in听undergraduate-level coursework听on a college campus听and included topics such as:

  • Using the Science of Hope to Achieve Our Goals
  • Math in Motion
  • Teaching and Learning Mathematics Through Problem Solving
  • Build a Recommender听System听Like Netflix's
  • Becoming Public Health Leaders: You Can Change How Families Thrive
  • Graphic Design and the Use of Digital Technologies
  • Art
  • The Human Endocrine System and Reproductive System
  • Biology
  • Interdisciplinary Science

To support girls and young women of color in their pursuit of careers in STEM,听MSK will conduct workshops听to听teach life skills听补苍诲听strategies for college and job success.听These skills include听resume听building,听interview strategies, 补苍诲听STEM career exploration to adequately prepare students for their next steps.
